About The Event

Addiction is often conceptualized as the process that occurs when an individual continues to engage with an external substance for a rewarding effect despite the harm it causes to oneself or others. But when we really begin to be honest with ourselves, is this definition of addiction not an experience we can all relate to on some level?

Nobody is sober… And that is okay. Through illegal substances, legal medicines, and everything in between, there is almost nothing more human than altering our internal state in an attempt to avoid pain. In this talk, join Lauren Ciovacco as he offers a view of addiction that removes the shame society has attached to this painful, yet normal human experience. Through insight and compassion, we can stop relating to addiction as a process “addicts” struggle with, but rather a process that each of us knows on the most intimate of levels. We can begin an honest conversation with each other about the places we hurt most and the various methods we use in a desperate attempt not to.
