About the event
Psychedelic Professionals Meetup Groups are in Boulder, Denver, and Fort Collins! Let's keep Colorado on the leading edge of psychedelic medicine work by coming together in community to learn, share, and grow. Each Psychedelic Professionals Meetup Group starts with an informative topic relevant to research, practice, policy, or activism around psychedelic medicines, followed by open discussion and an opportunity to connect with like-minded others.
For June in Boulder, we are very excited to be joined by Azul Delgrasso in "Exploring Consciousness: 5-MeO-DMT in Historical and Cultural Contexts." 5-Methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT) is a powerful psychedelic and entheogenic compound used for centuries by Indigenous Peoples in the Amazon, the Caribbean, and, more recently, Northern Mexico. It has been an integral part of ceremonial practices aimed at fostering a deep connection with nature. In recent years, 5-MeO-DMT has gained attention for its potential to treat mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This surge in interest has sparked increased scientific research into the compound's efficacy for these conditions. Despite its growing modern-day use, little is known about 5-MeO-DMT's historical use. This talk explores the known writings on the compound's origins and traditional use. It will also highlight limited data and accounts that provide insight into the compound's historical and cultural contexts. We invite you to join us in this exploration of the rich history and therapeutic potential of 5-MeO-DMT. Your presence and insights will be highly valued.
Azul DelGrasso, PhD Candidate, Romani and Denver native, has been a leading figure in the STD/HIV sector, with over two decades of national training and technical assistance contributions. His most notable work revolves around psychedelic research, and he is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the California Institute of Integral Studies, focusing on the psychedelic compound 5-MeO-DMT and its implications on consciousness studies. Besides his Ph.D. studies, Azul's academic achievements include Dual Master's Degrees in Latin American Studies and Ecopsychology from California State University and Naropa University respectively. Despite his extensive involvement in public health, he brings an intriguing element to his profile with his research on psychedelic substances, providing a unique blend of social health care and consciousness studies.
